Web tracking FAQs

The following table addresses many key questions to help Sitefinity Insight web tracking newbies.

Question Answer
Which websites do I track?

Depending on your Sitefinity CMS setup and the defined marketing and business goals, you can track specific sites and sub-domains separately or together. For example, you may have multisite Sitefinity CMS instance and you want to exclude from your tracked data a subset of sites that are not relevant to your marketing department's current goals, so results data is not diluted. For more information, see:

Where is tracked data stored? Insight collects and stores all tracked data in separate data centers, based on your Insight setup. A data center is the logical and physical separation of uploaded data - a single unit holding information from one or more data sources (systems or sites). For more information, see Data centers and data sources.
Is there any limit on the stored data? Limitations only apply on the number of visitors you can store data for and, consequently, personalize and optimize the customer journey for. The number of visitors depends on the type of Sitefinity CMS and Sitefinity Insight license you have. For details, contact sitefinitysales@progress.com
What do I track out-of-the-box? With Sitefinity Insight, you track a number of key interactions of your visitors on your Sitefinity CMS website, for example, file downloads, page visits, and so on. You use the dedicated connector in Sitefinity CMS, which handles data input from your site to Insight.
For more information, see Track interactions out-of-the-box.
Where can I see statistics about tracked data? With Insight you not only see statistics but you also get specialized reports that visualize and summarize the most important data about specific marketing metrics, for example, persona scoring rules, or conversion reports. For more information, see Work with the Analytics dashboard.
How do I leverage the data collected to target my audience?

To influence and optimize the customer journey, you need to first understand who your audience is and then understand your audience's behavior to deliver truly personalized content, interactions, and experiences. Insight enables you to get insights from data by the reports you choose to analyze for the metrics that are important to you. You can define persona and lead scoring rules, segment your audience, based on visitor data collected, personalize and contextualize the experience, and so on.

For example, if you want to personalize the site content for the top of the funnel, you define persona scoring rules for anonymous visitors. For information, see Lead scoring.
Are there any best practices for collecting and filtering data?

Depending on your scenario, you track different types of data from different sources. For example, if you use data from a CRM system, you need to integrate it with Insight. In addition, you may want to filter data coming from employees browsing your site, and so on.

For more information, see:

Are there any legal restrictions I need to follow? Keep in mind that you need the visitor's consent to track their data. For more information, see Tracking consent.
In case I am not using Sitefinity, how do I track visitors’ data? You leverage the Insight JavaScript and .NET SDKs to define the data you want to collect and then the REST API t send your data to DEC. For more information, see  Capture client-side behavior with JavaScript SDK and Capture server-side data with .NET SDK.
